“I lost someone very close to me when I was young. This in part is why I recreate objects to last forever. Part of my upbringing as a Japanese – Vietnamese American was to always give thanks; to our parents, to nature, and even to the food you ate. I find that as we get older we realize how precious all of those factors are. I photograph, sculpt and draw in order to capture and share those moments of impermanence.”

Vivian KD Truong is a fiber artist, photographer, sculptor and illustrator residing in Oakland, California. Her work aims to address the commonality of human existence documenting interactions through diptychs and surreal re-creations of existing environments. Vivian takes inspiration from her grandmother’s interest in wildlife and Japanese customs. Often wanting to cherish the ever-changing environment around her, she recreates her feelings of comfort and home.

The artist creates with felt, paper, fabric, photographs, wood and other found objects asking viewers to share in her exploration of embracing happiness.

Vivian is a member of the Asian American Women Artists Association and one of the artists whose work was featured as apart of the “So What Do You Have To Say For Yourself?”exhibit at Flax in November.
