“I often start with a figurative painting or a portrait. Then I adapt to the particular situation by subverting the picture plane in a variety of ways. Usually I either contract or expand the depicted space using one or more floating, intruding, or incongruous objects or subjects. My aim is to develop the classic genre of figurative work or portraiture into something more psychologically expressive and amusing. I chiefly work in pastel, oil pastel, or watercolor.” – Carlo Grünfeld.
A San Francisco native, Carlo was drawn to graphic arts as a youth. He studied the interaction of color at Yale University with Richard Lytle, and graduated with a degree in graphic design.
After college graduation, Carlo worked in the commercial art field, then soon became more interested in painting. At that time he also began teaching in the San Francisco public schools. He led volunteers on a community mural project, contributed illustrations for non-profits, and has taught summer art classes for teenagers. A few years ago he joined the teaching staff at Sharon Art Studios where he teaches painting to adults.
