Painting Sacred Spaces – Temples, Museums and the Beach.

A self-taught artist, David has been painting most of his life. In 2001 when he first traveled to India he was forced to learn to draw since photography was not allowed in the temples. Wanting to capture their beauty and evoke the emotions he felt, the drawing proved to be an entry into a deep, concentrated and meditative experience.

“I’m fascinated by encounters between the sacred and my species as revealed to me through drawing(s). Upon my return to the USA, temples gave way to museums, spaces I consider sacred because they nourish our hunger for beauty and our longing for meaning.”

Over time he has watched his paintings grow in stature, as strong color and bold abstraction have emerged from compositions rooted in the figure and line.

Back to his Bay Area roots, David mixes local and contemporary California elements into his paintings. On the painting at left, he says, “Museum walls are full of stories. Here is the Greek myth of Zeus in the form of a swan seducing Leda. A young girl in a red hourglass dress falls under the sway of the god of gods during a visit to the local picture gallery. The Pacific Ocean and Tamalpais (The Sleeping Princess) surrounded by a bed of Redwood trees and the rolling brown hills of California make up the modern backdrop”
