Mayan blue watercolor is a peacock blue, with a greenish or teal undertone. Because it is dyed palygorskite clay, it has properties of both brights and earths. It has a vivid color and granulating texture; it is lightfast and semi-transparent. Mayan blue tends to hold a brushstroke unless distributed in a wet wash; a dispersant such as ox gall can increase flow. A range of incredible, unique greens when mixed with azo green.
Mayan blue has an interesting history that is worth a read - the use in Maya and Aztec civilizations, the loss of its identity and recipe then subsequent rediscovery, and current pigment production from research done at the University of Texas. A fascinating pigment and beautiful color.
