Let's Go Sketch!

Let's Go Sketch! is an invitation to go sketch outdoors and on location, capturing what you see from direct observation. This workshop combines art instruction with opportunities to create community while encouraging students to discover nearby spaces and places by beginning a sketch practice of their own.


 Saturday June 12, 2021 ($60 fee)

Morning Sketch, 10:30 am - 1:30 pm
Afternoon Sketch, 2:00pm - 5:00pm

Class Fee - $60 (for 3 hours of instruction)

This workshop introduces students to basic concepts in drawing and painting while creating opportunities to connect with others in the outdoors. Students will meet at the FLAX Oakland Store location and walk two blocks to Preservation Park, where you'll learn about the history of the park and practice sketching and painting. In this class you will:

• Learn line drawing. 

• Learn three-tone value drawing. 

• Learn basic color mixing.

• Learn the practice of sketching from real life.

Maria Tuttle's experience in sketching and painting outdoors has shown her the importance of getting outside to learn the story of the community where she lives and work. Sketching outdoors provides her with the quiet focus to reflect on and feel connected to what she is observing. Maria is an educator, writer and artist who draws on her solid foundation in the arts and background in teaching to inspire, educate, and transform through art. Learn more about Maria here.

COVID-19: Each class is limited to 10 particpants. Maria is fully vaccinated, but regardless of anyone's vaccination status we expect to be socially distancing and wearing masks.

LOCATION: The meeting location for each workshop is at the FLAX Oakland store, located in Downtown Oakland, one block west of the Elihu Harris State Building at MLK and 15th.

Public Transit: We are a 5 minute walk from BART, either the 12th or 19th street stations.
Driving: We have free parking in our back parking lot off of 15th, with super easy access just off hwy 980.

Arrive early to shop and meet your instructor.


You will need a few basic materials for this workshop:

    • Small (3.5 inch x 5.5 inch or larger) watercolor notebook with quality paper
    • Small watercolor half pan paint set with primary colors and secondary colors
    • At least one quality watercolor round brush #6, #8, or #10 and/or brush set
    • One 4B and one 6B pencil
    • Waterproof Aquash Brush with Pigment Ink in black (optional)
    • Kneaded eraser
    • Pencil sharpener
    • Container for water
    • Tote bag or backpack to carry materials
