FLAX Artist Residency: Our Store - Your Studio

Artists can now apply for a weekend Artist Residency program at FLAX Oakland! Accepted artists can set up a mini studio on the FLAX sales floor during business hours, in a 6’ X 8’ space, for both Saturday and Sunday. We encourage artists to apply who would like to promote their artwork showcasing their process in a busy environment that is an extension of their studio, and artists who don't currently have a studio or gallery and would like the exposure.

We particularly urge artists who can engage the public in their art practices while working on projects. This is a great opportunity for artists to sell their work. 100% of all art sales go to the artist except tax unless using one’s own Square device.

FLAX will provide the space, an easel, table and chairs, taboret, print rack as well as a drop cloth. We want to support you! FLAX will promote each Artist Residency on our website, social media platforms, and eNewsletter in exchange for sharing your experiences during the residency on your social media.

All accepted artists receive a special FLAX discount of 30% on any products for that weekend. We do ask that no competitor's product names be present on our sales floor.

At FLAX our motto is “...inspiring creativity...”, and we hope being in our store will encourage not only your creativity but also inspire the customers who would see you working on your project.

Here's how to apply:

To apply, please send two pictures of your work that represent what you would be working on at FLAX, a link to your website and/or Instagram account, a couple of sentences of why you would like to make art at FLAX, and a few suggested weekend dates of availability. We will schedule the chosen artists for this program. (Please be aware that we cannot have open solvents on the sales floor.) Email your info to Joni Marie at jmt@flaxart.com with Artist Residency in the subject line.

Upcoming Artist in Residencies

Colleen Gianatiempo, October 27 - 28, 2018

As part of our FLAX Weekend Artist Residency Program, we would like to welcome local artist Colleen Gianatiempo. Colleen draws her formal influences from geometric and organic forms and expresses and interprets these elements abstractly. Her mixed media work embodies bold color, varying texture, amorphic shapes and patterns. One will always find a bit of geometry amidst layers of paint and paper. Gianatiempo describes her approach as spontaneous, allowing her artistic instincts to control the outcome of her final artworks.

“My work, expresses my love of nature and my observations of flowers and fauna. Embracing spontaneity, I coat on, layer over, sand off, erase, paint on top of, excavate, collage, spray away, remove and repeat. My work has many layers and the foundation for my art entails collaging papers from FLAX! Each piece transforms through equal parts order and chaos—come by and see the transformation!”
