Final Week of SF Open Studios

Final Week of SF Open Studios

Posted by Ellen Reilly on 3rd Nov 2014

November 7-9 marks the last weekend of this year’s SF Open Studios. Weekend 4 includes some far off reaches of San Francisco where you might not expect to find our City’s creative community. The open studio weekends connect art-lovers and collectors with artists, and ultimately help artists sustain a living making art. Find some original, affordable art works you love, meet the artists, and support your local arts community. Stop by FLAX to pick up a guide.

Fort Mason Center provides a venue for SF Open Studio artists

Fort Mason Center has provided exhibit space for artists on Open Studio weekends for many years. There is a lot of art to be seen at Fort Mason, so be sure to make it one of your stops this weekend.

Raj Khilnani. Multifeel, 2013, Acrylic, 36”x48”

In Fort Mason’s Golden Gate Room of Building A, you can meet Raj Khilnani and see his abstract artworks.

“My works are predominantly influenced by my interest in forms, textures and design elements found in architecture, nature and clothes. I use an embossing technique and materials like hand-made paper, sand and pieces of some of my old works to create finished art works. Please visit my website rajivkhilnaniart.com for more information about my works or schedule a visit to my studio at 689 Bryant St., San Francisco. I will be participating in Open Studios, Nov 7-9, at Fort Mason with my group, abstract7. Hope you can swing by to see my works in person.

Anita Toney. French Connections V: Oysters in Sète, 6”x9”, multiple plate etching

In Fort Mason’s Building D, you’ll find Bay   Printmakers and Anita Toney. Anita creates multi-plate etchings and has taught  printmaking for many years.

“The inspiration for my images comes from an appreciation of my surroundings inside and out, near and far while focusing on a certain mood or moment. My work surveys scenes from my life in California as well as travels to Europe, Peru and other parts of the United States. The multiple plate etching process allows me to portray these experiences with rich color and attention to detail. Each etching is an original piece of artwork. Open Studios 2014 will be my second year exhibiting with the Bay Printmakers at Fort Mason. This community of artists has a long time connection with City College of San Francisco’s Art Center in Building B which continues to offer affordable credit and continuing ed classes. As a printmaking instructor at CCSF@Fort Mason, I have been able to share my love of the medium with many students over the years. Spring 2015 classes will be open for enrollment soon. For more information: ccsf.edu.”

Also in Building D, be sure to check out Studio Nocturne--—a group of photographers whose primary subject matter is the night

Art-making in the Outer Sunset

Take your art adventure out as far as the ocean to 3 Fish Studios in the Outer Sunset, run by Annie Galvin and Eric Rewitzer, painters and printmakers, husband and wife. Opened in 2007, 3 Fish Studios is a dedicated space where Annie and Eric make and show their artwork together, and invite people to share the joy in doing the same.

Born and raised in Ireland, Annie worked as an illustrator in a Dublin agency before moving to San Francisco in 1989. She is inspired by San Francisco,Vogue magazine, comic books, Josef Frank textile designs, gardens, Mexican wrestlers, the short stories of Haruki Murakami, and her own dreams and daydreams.

Eric was born and raised on the industrial shores of Lake Michigan. He studied at the Cleveland Institute of Art. Eric finds constant inspiration in the scale and diversity of the California culture and landscape. He finds San Francisco to be an amazing mix of natural beauty, urban grit, and human diversity. Together they are strong believers in a collaborative process of creating and sharing art, and they love to be surrounded by the vibrancy of creative people sharing ideas.
